Steven Butler is described by researcher Mrs. Edna Mary Sears Dunning as a
"Non-conformist English Clergyman." What little we know of him is through his two sons who came to America from Braintree, Essex County, England. His son Richard came to America in 1632 and settled Hartford. William also settled Hartford and when he died in 1648 his will left legacies to sister’s Mrs. West and Mrs. Winters in old England. The Butler society says that Mrs. West’s given name is Jane. According to another source Steven may have lived in the parish of Kelvedon which is situated in Essex County, England. The village of Kelvedon is slightly southeast of Braintree. However a review of the list of rectors of the church in Kelvedon do not show a Butler.
