Samuel Church [Garrett¹] was born 10 June 1640 in Watertown, Middlesex County, Massachusetts. He was the son of Garrett and Sarah Church. He married Elizabeth Davis born 11 November 1658 in Charlestown, Suffolk County, Massachusetts. She was the daughter of Samuel Davis and Mary Waters.
Samuel and his wife had five known children born in Groton between 1686 and 1692. Some time after the birth of their children Samuel moved to the area of Plainfield/Voluntown, Windham County, Connecticut.
Voluntown lands were granted to volunteers of the Narragansett War in 1700. It means "Volunteertown." In 1704 the town was surveyed and boundaries established. Lots were drawn and each eligible volunteer received a lot. Samuel does not appear among the first settlers but we find him in October 1723 when he appears on a list adopting the Westminster Confession of Faith, the first Presbyterian Church in Connecticut formed in Voluntown. Rev. Mr. Coit of Plainfield preached. The petition stated "We believe that the word of God is a perfect rule of faith and obedience, and acknowledge and believe that confession of faith composed by the Rev. Assembly of divines, sitting at Westminister..."
In May 1724 at an assembly the citizens could not agree on where to place a meeting house. Among the signatures is Samuel Church along with a Jacob Church.
Samuel’s death occurred 27 November 1724.
