Samuel Butler, [Richard²; Steven¹] was born about 1640; the son of Deacon Richard Butler and Elizabeth Bigelow. He married Elizabeth Olmstead.
In 1668 he became the school master for the town of Wethersfield, Connecticut. By 1670 he was a householder and in 1689 he was a selectman. A selectman was chosen by town members to carry out regular town business as well as reporting persons who were not in church.
There is no reference that he participated in King Phillip’s War which occurred when he was about 36/37 years of age. His reference by 1689 as "Ensign" was most likely because he was acting as an heir for his father’s estate who died in 1684. Or the reference can also simply signify that he did in fact have an office within the town.
Samuel was a deacon in his church and when he wrote his will the 30th December 1692 he stated he was penitent and sorry for sins and wished to commit his soul to God. The will stated that he was "sick and weake" a common statement used when writing a death bed will. Samuel died the following day and the Wethersfield Records state "Ye last day of wk, ye last day of mo, ye last day of yr, and as he sayd, so it proved, ye last day of his life."
