Robert Carr, [Benjamin, William] was born 04 October 1614 in London, England. . He was the son of Benjamin Carr and Martha Hardington.

Robert Carr came to America with his brother Caleb on the ship Elizabeth and Ann May 9, 1635 which sailed from London with Roger Cooper as Captain and docked at Boston. Robert is marked on the ship list as age 21 with an occupation of tailor. His brother Caleb was eleven.

They were thought to have come to America, by at least one researcher, to live with their uncle William who was settled in Rhode Island. However it is more likely that Caleb was a charge of Robert and that they remained in Boston for a short time. In early 1637 a group left Boston for Rhode Island because of religious differences. There we find Robert listed as an inhabitant of Pocassit settlement in 1638. Pocassit would later be known as Portsmouth, Rhode Island.

Two years later, Robert became a freeman in the new settlement of Newport where he probably married. He had six children. Robert was a member of the Society of Friends, was involved in the purchase of Conanicut later called Jamestown, Rhode Island. He was one of the original purchasers of Narraganset Bay. Though it is thought that he maintained his residence in Newport.

Robert Carr wrote his will 20 April 1681, while preparing for a "voyage" between New Jersey and New York. His wife was still living and he provided her with household "stuff" and twenty pounds yearly. The will however does not cite her name and researchers have yet to determine who she is.

He gave his son Caleb land at Conanicut where he grazed his sheep and requested that son Caleb give another ten pounds to his mother annually. The sheep were given to daughter Margaret along with the money from the "horseflesh" once sold. He provided a sum for his grandchildren by daughter Mary who had married John Hicks. He left his house and the wharf leading to it and the lands adjoining it to son Robert who also was to pay his mother seven pounds yearly. His son-in-law James Brown and daughter Elizabeth had already been provided with land next to the dwelling property plus all that they had built upon and fenced. Robert’s son Esek received the property next to Robert’s.

Robert Carr died some time between the writing of his will in April and O4 October 1681 when John Williams and Henry Dyre appeared before council to declare that they had seen the deceased sign his will while he was still in perfect health and memory.
