Robert Allyn [Edward, Edmond, John³, John², Richard¹] was the son of Edward Allyn and Elizabeth Scott. His estimated date of birth is about 1608 in England. His wife’s name was Sarah.

Robert lived in Salem, Essex County, Massachusetts in 1636. The next year The Pequot War erupted. This war was the culmination of conflicts between the colonists and the Indians. There were disputes over property, livestock damaging Indian crops, hunting, and dishonest traders. The Colonists believed that they had a right given them by God to settle the area. They wanted the natives converted to their way of God. The Indians were disturbed at the encroachment of their lands by the colonies.

The effect of the Pequot War was felt immediately. Power shifted from natives to the English colonies.

Robert Allyn became a proprietor on Jeffery’s Creek in 1638. Robert was admitted to the church in Salem in 1642 about the same time that his daughter, our ancestor Sarah Allyn was born. By 1648 he was a constable in Salem. Robert migrated from Salem to New London, New London County, Connecticut. By 1656 he had land on the east bank of the Thames or Peqout River later known as Allyn’s Point in his honor. With boundary changes this portion of land fell in what would become Ledyard. Allyn’s Point would be a well known trading post by 1675.

He was one of a company that purchased land in Norwich where he was appointed constable in 1669. Robert Allyn died probably on part of his farm preserved as Allyn’s Point in 1683.
