Phillip Bartlett resided in Waterbury town, Chittenden County, Vermont where he was elected treasurer in 1792. He married Lydia, the widow of James Marsh 11 June 1784 from Royalton, Windsor County, Vermont. Royalton was the scene of one of the Revolutionary Wars worst attacks by both the Indians and British on October 16, 1780 causing total destruction. It is possible that Lydia’s first husband died during this attack known forever as "the raid."
Phillip and Lydia’s marriage is claimed as the first in Waterbury town. But Lydia herself said they were married at Royalton. By 1793 there were a total of 15 families living in the town. Phillip and Lydia were living on what was known as the Hawley place at this time. A month after their marriage their first son John was born.
Some time after the birth of their son William in 1797 the family moved to Clinton County, New York. Phillip Bartlett died in Saranac 12 May 1816. I
In 1841 Lydia and her sons filed for a military pension under Phillip’s name claiming that he had enlisted at either Deerfield or Hatfield, Massachusetts at the commencement of the Revolutionar War and was in the battles of Lexington and White Plains. The pension application states that he was once taken prisoner of war and carried to Montreal and again taken and cartied to Fort Niagara from whence he escaped. They then claimed that he was once again taken about a year before the war closed north of Lake Superior and was released after the close of the war.
Lydia could not give the names of the officers but thought that he might have made Lt. By the end of the war. The pension was rejected because of lack of evidence.
