Matthew DeAtterly and wife Elizabeth resided in Richmond County, Virginia. Some researchers state that Matthew was the emigrant ancestor having come to America from France.
In January 1782 Matthew wrote his will stating he was of Richmond County Virginia.
Matthew left his wife Elizabeth M. Deatterly the whole of his estate while she was a widow. He left son’s George and Thomas each a one year old colt. After his wife’s decease or re-marriage the estate was to be divided equally among all his children. He then repeated "If my wife continues as widow and keeps herself clear of any man I leave the whole of my estate to her during her life." Matthew appointed sons James and John to be executors of the estate. The will was witnessed by John Sanders and Christopher Deatterly.
According to Ethel DeAtley of Metcalf, Illinois son James asked the court for permission to omit the syllable "er" from their last name at the time they probated his will in 1785.
Ethel was a descendant of son James Deatley born about 1750 in Richmond Cunty Virginia. John Sanders, witness to his father’s will also stood as security when James married Elizabeth Fegitt 22 March 1788 in Westmoreland County, Virginia. James fought in the Revolutionary War. He died December 1843 in Oak Grove, Westmoreland County, Virginia.
Son George Deatley married Sally Mothershead 22 September 1789 in Westmoreland County. Nothing further is known by this compiler of son Thomas. Christopher Deatley resided at the fork of Totuskey Creek and died about 1795 in Farnham Parish, Richmond County, Virginia. Son John married Jemima Porter and is the ancestor in our family.
Matthew Deatterly’s will was proven 22 February 1785 in Westmoreland County, Virginia.
