Family Chart #878

John Hiatt [Hiett], Jr, was born circa 1694 in Gloucester, England. He was the son of John Hiatt and Mary Smith. When John was about 5 years old his father immigrated with William Penn’s second trip to Penn Colony. The family settled along the Delaware River with their lands located in Bucks County, Pennsylvania.

Some researchers state that John was married twice. His second marriage to Margaret Stephens. Their first child, George, was born about 1723. Between 1733 and 1735 the family migrated through Monacacy, Prince George County, Maryland. In November 1735 John received a patent on Opequon Creek, Frederick County, Virginia. The Opequon is part of the Shanendoah River Basin. John’s property was located on the west side of the Shenandoah River. Opequon Creek flows through Frederick County, Jefferson and Berkeley Counties now West Virginia.

Shawnee Indians resided in Frederick County. After Braddock’s defeat on July 9, 1755 there was an exodus of frightened people southward. Washington wrote a letter to Dinwiddie stating his apprehension that Augusta, Frederick and Hampshire County would be depopulated. Among those migrating were the John Hiatt family who went to Rowan County, North Carolina. In the summer of 1758 northern Indians at war on behalf of French interests committed acts of terror upon the scattered settlements of Rowan County. By 1759 the Hiatt’s had returned to Hampshire County, Virginia on the Capon Drain of Sandy Ridge.

John wrote his will October 1764. He provided sums of money to his children and tracts of land to his sons. Among those John left 222 acres on the branch of the North River of the Cacapon in Hampshire County to son Evan which he had purchased from son George "where the plantation is." His wife was to have all that she needed from the estate as well as tuition to bring up son Evan. Sometime within the next two months John died. His will was probated 4 December 1764.
