Henrich Barbe, Sr, [Johann Jacob³, Wigandt², Johann Jacob¹] was born 15 August 1759 probably in Loudoun County, Virginia. He was the son of Johann Jacob Barbe, Sr and Maria Catharina Richter. Researcher Olive McLaughlin described Henrich/Henry as having blue eyes and reddish brown hair with a rosy complexion.

The northwestern part of the County was known as the "German Settlement." Four hundred twenty five square miles were settled by Germans as early as 1730. When Henrich’s father arrived in America in 1749 they chose Loudoun County to settle. During the Revolutionary War Armand’s Legion was commissioned with French nobleman Charles Trefin Armand, the Marquis de la Rouaire as Colonel of the American Army. Those of military age who spoke mostly German volunteered, signing on in the summer of 1777 with Armand. But no record has been located of Henrich Barbe having served in either the militia or Continental Army.

Instead it is assumed that Henrich/Henry married in early 1777 probably in Loudoun County, Virginia to Mary Winegardner. There are no available marriage records for Loudoun County for this time frame. Henry appears on the 1775 tithables of Loudoun County, and the 1778 tithables and continues on the lists within Loudoun County through 1780.

Henry and Mary’s first child was born December 1777 assumed in Loudoun County. In October 1779 his wife Mary is listed as Mary Barb in her father’s will in the same county yet some researchers list the birth of son William as Shenandoah County in August of the same year. Six more children [Catherine, Margaret, Henry, Susannah, Lydia, Rachel] were born in Shenandoah County, Virginia between 1781 and 1795.

According to the Olive McLaughlin, in her own hand, Henrich’s son Henry was drafted for the army in the War of 1812 and his father volunteered to go in his son’s place saying he was "an old soldier and his son had little children to leave..." This item was written by Olive McLaughlin between 1891 and 1914 while Henry was still living however she does not say who provided the information. A search of Virginia 1812 militia lists at the Library of Virginia found no listing for Henry.

Henry Barbe wrote his will on the 14th of July 1819. He died 24 August 1819 at Mt. Clifton, Shenandoah County, Virginia. His funeral was performed by Rev. J. N. Smucker. Henrich/Henry Barbe, Sr. was was buried in Solomon Lutheran Church Cemetery at Forestville. His will was probated 13 September 1819 in Shenandoah. Son Henry received his plantation and land containing 142 acres. When items of the estate were sold, son Henry also purchased a bible written in German Script and a bible written in English as well as a hymnal. His children including Rachel the wife of Daniel Halterman were also mentioned in his will.
