Elizabeth Church,[Samuel˛, Garrettą]was born About 1690 in Groton, Middlesex County Massachusetts. She was the daughter of Samuel Church and Elizabeth Davis.
She married Thomas Harris 11 February 1713/14 in Plainfield, Windham County, Connecticut. Plainfield was originally known as "Quinebaug." The area had been home to the Mohegan who settled a village known as Moosup. In May 1699 Governor John Winthrop petitioned to bring thirty families to settle this frontier on lands owned by his family. In 1700 the town was renamed Plainfield by the Governor. Roads were developed in the 1700's from Providence to Norwich that ran through the town of Plainfield, making it an important trading post for agriculture. By the time Elizabeth married the population was slowly growing with the main occupation farming of the fertile lands. It would be 100 years before cotton mills would be built along the Moosup and Quinebaug River.
Their first child, a daughter, Rebeckah, was born 26 September 1714 at Plainfield. Elizabeth had a total of seven children, six being girls. Our ancestor Martha was born in Plainfield 1 March 1718. In 1728 an unknown illness swept through the town leaving 20 dead as well as an unknown number of Indians. There is no record showing that this effected the Harris family. Elizabeth gave birth to her last child Ruth 27 July 1730.
