Dorothy Butler, [Samuel³; Richard²; Steven¹] was the daughter of Samuel Butler and Elizabeth Olmstead. Dorothy grew up in the town of Wethersfield, Hartfield County, Connecticut. She married Joseph Kilbourne 04 June 1696. Capt. John Chester, Commissioner preformed the ceremony.

Wethersfield was well established. The land around the village was a mixture of timber, meadow, marsh and river. The area where families grazed livestock is now a lovely village green.

In April 1697 Dorothy gave birth to a little girl promptly naming her Dorothy. In July 1700 they named their new son Joseph. These births were followed by Jonathon in March 1703/4 and James, our ancestor, on 13 April 1707.

When James was 1 4/12 months old his mother, Dorothy, died on 19 August 1709. Joseph Kilbourne remarried in June the following year to Hester Gibbs who subsequently had four children that were raised with Dorothy’s children.
