Alexander Clayton, [John, Thomas, Thomas, Zebulon, John, Edmund, Henry] was born 17 June 1802 in Hampshire County [West] Virginia.. He was the son of John Calvin Clayton and Mary Brown. When he was two years old he traveled with his parents from Virginia to Ohio settling in what was then part of Muskingum County. The area where the family settled would later be named Clayton Township, Perry County, Ohio after his family.
When he was 23 years old he had saved enough money to purchase 60 acres of property in Deerfield township from Moses Goodin for $300.00. Moses Goodin’s 2nd wife is thought, by this compiler, to be Alexander’s Grandmother Clayton. His first land transaction was not profitable and he sold the property at a $200.00 loss in 1827.
Alexander married Hannah W Collins 03 May 1832 in Perry County Ohio. Their first child, Elizabeth was born 5 June 1835. Sometime between 1835 and 1837 Alexander, his wife and daughter moved to Wesley township, Washington County, Ohio. Their son David Elzy was born in Bartlett, Wesley township 17 July 1837. As part of the county requirements that all adult males preform civic duties he was appointed fence viewer in April 1838. Alexander’s primary occupation was a farmer.
The village of Bartlett was originally known as Plymouth. It also incorporated East Plymouth and Pleasanton. The Claytons bought and sold several lots and acres in Wesley township through out the 1840's. Two more children were born, James Allen Clayton in 1840 and our ancestor Isaac Calvin Clayton born 17 April 1843.
When Alexander’s father died in 1854 he left $120.00 for Alexander and an equal portion from the sale of John’s farm in Perry County, Ohio. The sale of his father’s land was finalized in 1859.
In 1865 Alexander and Hannah sold their son James Allen 31 acres. In 1869 Alexander began purchasing properties in the area of Pleasanton. Alexander Clayton died 12 April 1878 and was buried in Smith Cemetery on county road 206 north east of Bartlett.
